DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
Render Unto Caesar: Welfare, Charit
y, and Political Islam (with Maleke Fourati and Gabriele Gratton)<
/p>
Abstract:

Data from the first post-Arab Spring elections reveal that support for
Islamic parties came from richer districts and individuals. We develop a t
heory of political support for religious parties that explains this phenome
non. We predict that the probability that a voter supports a religious part
y (i) increases in income for the poorest voters, but decreases in income f
or the richest; and (ii) is greater for voters in richer districts. We test
these predictions on original micro-level data in a nationally representat
ive sample of 600 individuals in 30 districts in Tunisia. Our empirical res
ults confirm both predictions and suggest that belonging to the middle clas
s and living in a richer district together affect voting decisions more tha
n being a religious voter. We document similar patterns in other key electi
ons in the Muslim world.
